Fierce bones we dare to walk upon
About the collection:
I am originally from Wellington, NZ and was back there in 2011 when I immersed myself in thinking about hills and land and water. I’d never been into painting that stuff, before, except as backdrops for murals. But they are an anchor to home, a gut-punch of a connection made sharper by 15 years out of the country.
This series grew from a painting that I was creating for my brother and his wife. I was struggling with wanting it to be both right (always a stupid place to start), and to have the energy and caring I felt for the two of them. No pressure!
While I repainted their painting several times, I explored a bunch of different methods, and ended up thinking about and working on several landscape and painting medium ideas at once. They are painted as canvas scrolls or sails, and you can see the sewn edges in some pieces.
The collection, “Land” is the result of this exploration. I used abstract watercolor washes and aerial or feet-on-ground photographs of the Orongorongo Ranges as source material. In each of the paintings I was pushing myself to share what I feel when I think about these ranges. The vertical drops are aerial, and the horizontal canvases are the feet-on-ground based. I used the photos as starting points, along with the many small sample watercolor washes. I had fun making them, and I hope you enjoy them too!
